Practically Speaking

Kyle and her husband moved to Brookfield in 1986. She became active in local politics and started blogging in 2004. Her focus is primarily on local issues but often includes state and national topics, too. Kyle looks at things from the taxpayers’ perspective in a creative, yet down to earth way, addressing them from a practical point of view.

Tax break for wooden arrows? And that's the good part of Senate bailout

By Kyle Prast

The Senate bailout plan passed Tuesday night. The bill went from the 113 page house version to 450-something pages! How could the Senators even read 450 pages?

This travesty of a bailout bill epitomizes everything wrong with Washington: Dire problem...Don't fix problem...Load on the pork...Make problem worse.

What is in there? I heard some tax breaks. The oddest was for children's wooden arrow manufacturers. I call that the good part because at least it probably does not amount to much money.

This bill is probably everything Congressman Paul Ryan feared. Certainly the Senate version did not get that month long, or even a week long committee meeting process that Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner wanted. Instead they rushed this pig through.

Michelle Malkin posted 3 pieces Tuesday: Kill the baliout: The vote draws near, and The Senate votes, and Read the Senate bailout bill here, which included the bill's language. They give a flavor of the night and bill. Nays include: Brownback, Bunning, Dole, DeMint, Feingold, Inhofe, Johnson, Sanders, Sessions, Shelby, to name a few. The votes are recorded at end of Malkin's The Senate votes posting. (I will have to thank Feingold, which does not happen very often.)

Correction: Hold the phone, the following did not make it into the final bill: The bill included an amendment from Senator Sanders for a 10% income tax surcharge on incomes above $500,000, $1million for couples. That will hurt some small business owners.

It goes back to the House Thursday, with a vote possibly on Friday. If you are a praying person, pray the House would have wisdom.

The most important piece, the repeal of the Community Reinvestment Act I think is still sadly lacking. Without that piece of the pie, I think we are doomed to just keep repeating the cycle.

Seems that additional 340-some pages were pure lard.

Sickening.

We have a model that worked pretty well when the government stepped in with the Savings and Loans. Why didn't they do that?  What about the Republican model of lending institutions purchasing insurance? Another possibility comes from frugal Dave Ramsey.

Post Script bright spot: "The bill also reaffirms the Securities and Exchange Commission's authority to suspend so-called mark-to-market accounting, an issue that gained surprising traction among lawmakers looking for less costly alternatives to the Bush plan. The practice, adopted in the aftermath of the savings-and-loan collapse in the 1980s, pegs the value of assets to their current market price, rather than the price paid for them.'

Hi Kyle,

I agree with you (and Sen. Sensenbrenner and Feingold - did those two vote the SAME on an issue?) on this one. I was always against the quick bailout, and not just because i have no faith in Pres. Bush or Wallstreet. There are many financial advisers that recommend a thorough analysis and a response that is more intelligent and less rushed.  Though financial markets are taking a sharp hit because of this situation, better to get it right than get it fast. I am not against a bailout/buy-in, and expect something to pass soon, but the direction this thing is now leading is disgusting. Fix the problems, add sensible and strong regulations (we are paying for it, let's make sure there is some safety for taxpayers), and cut it to the bare minimum.  They, Both Sides Equally, failed last night. Adding pork to BUY a certain number of votes is ridiculous.

I have to say the 10% tax surcharge on millionaires doesn't sound too bad to me. It isn't a tax on business, just those profiting handsomely from them, I just don't feel bad when millionaires have to work a little harder to jump through the vast number of tax loopholes and methods of 'book-cooking' available to them.  If they want to avoid the added tax, all they have to do in invest more profits back into the company to keep their personal take below the $1/2-1 million amount. At least that addition is not just a direct vote buyout like many of the other quick additions.  But even that addition should not be part of this package but should be in tax code change packages at some other time.

There oughtta be a law... and it should say that no bill can be brought to the floor that contains anything unrelated to the topic of the bill. End the buyout of votes. Maybe that sounds a bit too idealistic for reality?

Kyle's reply: First, I was wrong on the 10% surcharge. That did not make it in. (I posted that clarification.)

Sensenbrenner voted NO on the House version, which was 113 pages. Feingold voted NO on the Senate version, 450+ pages.

I am not voting for ANY candidate that votes "YES" for any bailout plan that includes pork and doesn't enact fixes to the problems that got us here in the first place.  The politicians are trying to enact anything in order to not lose any votes.  I can't understand why the votes of the minorities are more significant to the the politicians than the votes of the majority.  Is it because responsible people are just too quiet about the abuses being levied against us?

This article points out that the increase in foreclosures is mostly for mortgages that should never have been made.  Let those who took the mortgages and those that made them suffer the consequences for their action...not the responsible taxpayers.  I bet if you took a tour of these foreclosed homes you would be appalled at the condition they are being left in!  The whole thing is disgusting!

Kyle's plea: I am frustrated by McCain's vote on this too, but if you and others don't vote McCain, we then for sure get Obama. It's the proverbial rock and hard place.

Kyle, it seems wrong to vote for "the lesser of two evils" over and over again.  It seems like the right thing to do is to vote for the candidate that truly represents the Constitution.  I know that the real power of the government lies in the legislation that is presented for signature, and McCain wouldn't get squat out of the Dems if they win.  His phony spiel that he can work across party lines means that he hasn't been awake for the past eight years while Bush tried to work with those who hate him.  The only thing that has saved us from complete disaster is the fact that the Republicans can block the schemes of the Dems in the Senate.  If we lose that, it's all over for the taxpayers!

If I vote for McCain as a vote against Obama and Obama wins anyhow, then I have to face myself in the mirror everyday knowing that the man in the mirror sold out his principles.  I don't think I'm willing to do that anymore, especially since I think McCain is more socially liberal than I like for a Republican.

Kyle's reply: I do understand your position. BUT, if Obama wins, with a Democratic house and senate majority, I fear we will not be able to undo all the social programs he enacts during his 4 years. I truly do not believe we will be able to reverse his socialist trends of pre-K for all, National Health, College for all, green only energy, etc.

Plus, the Supreme Court appointments a leftist like Obama selects would harm us for years. Obama is pro gay marriage and pro abortion/embryonic stem cell research. Will you be able to look at yourself in the mirror then? I plead with you to cast your vote for McCain to stop Obama. A vote for a 3rd party will not STOP Obama; it only helps Obama.
