Catholic group not happy with Biden V.P. pick

I am a little puzzled by this statement, since the Democrat's presidential candidate and platform are pro-abortion too.

The Roman Catholic group, Fidelis, says Barack Obama's selection of pro-abortion Catholic Joe Biden to be his V.P. running mate "is a slap in the face to Catholic voters" and poses a major challenge for American Catholics.

In a press release sent out overnight, Fidelis president, Brian Burch, declared that Barack Obama has "re-opened a wound among American Catholics" by picking a pro-abortion Catholic politician like Joe Biden.

According to Burch, the American Catholic bishops have made it clear that Catholic political leaders must defend the dignity of every human person, including the unborn.

The article goes on to state Joe Biden's "steadfast support for legal abortion" in the US Senate.

This same issue came up in the 2004 election when John Kerry "sparked a nationwide controversy over whether Catholics who support legal abortion can receive communion."

The Catholic group's president, Brian Burch stated, "Selecting a pro-abortion Catholic is a slap in the face to Catholic voters."

According to Burch, "The American bishops have instructed Catholic voters to consider many issues, but have characterized the defense of human life as foundational and have explained that the issue has a special claim on the conscience of the Catholic voter. This means that a political candidate like Biden, because of his strong support for abortion rights, forfeits any claim for support despite his views on other issues like health care and the economy."

I would agree with Mr. Burch that this issue is foundational.

What I don't quite understand is why would a pro-life Catholic (or a pro-life voter from any other religion) be voting for Barack Obama--the most anti pro-life candidate?

Hi Kyle, I don't know if you had the opportunity to listen to Mark Bellings program yesterday hosted by Kevin Fisher. Very Lively debate on the Womens rights with regard to a pregnancy caused by insest or rape that brought out the pro-life group. Kevin expressed a very supportive opinion supporting the vitums right to make a decesion on an abortion. Of course the pro-lifers called in to express their views. Very interesting and I felt Kevin Fisher expressed the support for his views very good. Obama flops around on his thinking on most subjects that he gets beat up on all the time. How he handle's this one we will soon see. McCain has made a very short and conscise statement on the issue and his definition of when life starts. Obama is wishy-washie , his pay level does not let him make a decesion on the subject most likely. I will give your artical a 5 , thank you.

I my self take the position that it is a decesion of the Mother to make. The Bible supports that and says nothing about abortion. Listened to many programs on this subject and those that express their feelings twist the bibles expression on the subject to fit their needs. The talk show host is usually very versed in the bible and has great commentary for those quoting scripture. Always a hot arguement on the side of the pro-lifers.

I am not a Bible guru but those that have command of the scripture support the fact that the mother in volved has to make the decesion. I am also not a member of the Catholic religion. I would offer the Mother the support for the decesion that she has made. Always very difficult along with the trama of the event or event's that led to the pregnancy.

My Two Cents

Some people call themselves "Catholic" but ignore foundational principles like "right to life."  "Pro-choice Catholic' is an oxymoron.  "Pro-life Democrat is also an oxymoron. You can't be both. If they cast their vote for a Democrat, they are voting for abortion.  If they have any Catholic faith, they must know they will face their Maker some day and will be turned away.  I wish the Church would stop looking the other way on this issue.  God won't.

Having been educated as a kid by the School Sisters of Notre Dame, I'm not too happy about anything! And the thought of voting for Biden doesn't make me any less happy regardless of his stand on abortion.

It's at least encouraging to learn that he has been a steadfast supporter of something. His presence on the ticket might attenuate Osama's 'flipflop'edness, as together they lead us down the drain to perdition.

Kyle's reply: Um, was that supposed to be Obama's?

And Larry gets a 1 for spelling.

Kyle's reply: I love Firefox for that very reason. Their spell check keeps me on the straight and narrow. I would correct readers comments, but I am not supposed to alter them.

What some folks label 'spelling errors', others think of as 'editorial comment'!

"It's a @#%$* poor mind that can only think of one way to spell a word."

- Andrew Jackson (1767–1845), 7th President of the United States (1829–1837)

Can you imagine the uproar if elected officials dismissed resident's comments because they used poor spelling, grammar, lisped while speaking, etc.?  Remember, literacy is not a requirement for writing a blog, or even voting (for the most part, as defined by the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and subsequent court decisions.)

Kyle's reply: *The actual quote included a swear word, which I don't print as written  (regardless if it is in a quote or comment.)

I rate this story 4.  It just as well could be a 5, but sometimes you include so much research and insight, that I'll save the "5" for those stories.  Great work as always.

Mick and Intewedm  get a -1 for internet manners, and consistently well  earned. I have tried to look up the spelling of "Intewedm" in my dictionary but its not there. Just another one of life's big error's.

Kyle, the up-side of this decision is that it leaves Johnny Mac free to choose the Hillster as his running mate. Can't you just imagine Johnny in the White House and both Hill and Bill safely tuckd away in that 'undosclosed location'?

Kyle's reply: I can't imagine that happening, but I think people will be watching the Democratic convention to see what Hillary and her delegates will do.

Can we keep comments about the issues and not about each other?
