Practically Speaking

Kyle and her husband moved to Brookfield in 1986. She became active in local politics and started blogging in 2004. Her focus is primarily on local issues but often includes state and national topics, too. Kyle looks at things from the taxpayers’ perspective in a creative, yet down to earth way, addressing them from a practical point of view.

Belling talking about Elmbrook and Wisconsin taxes now

By Kyle Prast
Wednesday, Mar 19 2008, 04:40 PM

FYI, Mark Belling, is talking about our referendum and Wisconsin taxes right now on his radio show at 4:35pm.

He mentioned the alderman who called our schools an embarrassment (Mahkorn) and the 12 aldermen who endorsed Elmbrook's referendum.

Mark said, if the residents vote for this, then they better not call his show complaining of their high property taxes.

A caller noted that the two aldermen who did not endorse the referendum were former city employees. Possibly they know something the other aldermen don't? Belling did not want the caller to speak for Balzer or Carnell. It was an interesting observation though.

UPDATE: I almost forgot that Bill Carnell once was on the school board too!

Belling notes and quotes: Wisconsin ranks 44th in favorable business tax climate, 50th for retirees.

"The one positive thing about referendums is that you at least get to vote NO."

"I know it is very hard to be the lone wolf."

He praises the New Berlin school district in their approach. "I hope the (Elmbrook) referendum fails." New Berlin has built 2 new schools without raising taxes.

"At what point in Wisconsin are we going to say, enough is enough."

You may want to listen to the podcast (hour 2, part 1-housing values, raised taxes, fees, Brookfield council and 2) if you cannot listen live.

My Two Cents

After listening to the Belling program, I am embarrassed for Brookfield.  Why are city officials endorsing school board programs?  Is the mayor going to ask for input from the school board for city development? They should all concentrate on the questions they were elected to address.  Mahkorn is out of line calling our schools an "embarrassment."  Elmbrook puts out an excellent product. We can't really know why any of the councilmen did or did not sign the letter, can we?

I think the mayor and his cronies, many of whom were Bloomberg cronies, has a vision for Brookfield that is for a big commercial center rather than a bedroom community.  Since the voters keep reelecting them, one has to assume we are either uninformed or we agree with them. Mahkorn should not be reelected but I'll bet he will be!

Dear INTEWEDM, the problem is these guys run unopposed.  Mahkorn will be reelected because no one is challenging him.  We need more residents willing to give of their time and energy to change things.  We have weeded out a few and I pray another is knocked out on April 1.

Kyle's reply: Very true. Watch for my Clean Sweep posting.

Interesting about 50th for retirees...that's hard to believe.

I just read recently, I think in the AARP Magazine that Milwaukee is a top retiree city.  Do you remember where he cited his source from?

Kyle's reply: I do remember the AARP article. It surprised me. I think it showed a couple walking along the river walk hand in hand. If memory serves me correctly their criteria was on cultural and convenience issues more than economic?

It is the property taxes and income taxes that kill us. A $270,000 home in Shorewood, for example has property taxes above $6,000 a year. Considering many seniors live off of primarily just their Social Security + a little pension (no income tax problem there), their property taxes alone take about 1/3 of their monthly income.

I did not write down the source, sorry. I think it was at the beginning of the 2nd hour podcast. Maybe someone else remembers?

I guess that article is predicated on the belief that people who relocate for retirement can afford where they move.
